The Dojo: Learning Karate Etiquette

What is Dojo Etiquette?

Dojo etiquette is a set of rules and customs that govern behavior in a karate dojo, or training hall. These rules are designed to create a respectful and safe environment for all students.

Kneeling (Seiza)

When sitting in seiza, or kneeling position, students should keep their knees hip-width apart and their toes pointed forward. The hands should be placed on the thighs, with the palms facing down. The back should be straight and the head held high.

Bowing in Seiza

When bowing in seiza, students should lower their heads until their foreheads touch the ground. The bow should be slow and deliberate, and should be held for a few seconds before rising back up.

Kneeling Bow

The kneeling bow is a more formal bow than the seiza bow. To perform a kneeling bow, students should kneel on one knee with the other leg extended behind them. The hands should be placed on the thighs, with the palms facing down. The head should be lowered until the forehead touches the ground.

Entering and Exiting the Dojo

When entering the dojo, students should bow to the instructor and then to the other students. When leaving the dojo, students should bow to the instructor and then to the other students.
